Maisy Kay is a rising star in the music industry with a bold and fascinating new fresh voice in pop music. This singer-songwriter is transforming pop music into her own sub-genre of pop. Her single “In Your Car” premiered April 5, 2024 and iswritten and performed by her. She creatively designs all of her EP covers and even has her own Webstore with a line personally created blending in with her aesthetic! Maisy released her hit single “Sunlight” on February 14, 2024 in honor of her boyfriend’s birthday. The single followed an ethereal music video and within a week of being uploaded, the video garnered 36K+ views on YouTube.

Moving from a small countryside in England to the heart of Los Angeles, Maisy Kay is a one-of-a-kind musician blending nostalgic dance and pop music magnified through her lyrics and overall inspiration behind every track. Her 2020 smash single “The Storm” with gaming music creator, TheFatRat, hit over 20 million streams on Spotify. She has collaborated with A List musicians including Timbaland, Tiësto, Rodney “Darkchild” Jenkins, Max Martin protégé Lukas “LULOU” Loules, & more!

Maisy Kay has incorporated her love for fantasy and alternate worlds with her original single “The Beast Within” inspired by the fictional Na’vi language from “Avatar.” She has made waves with her hit singles, “Karma is a Bitch Like You (Tiesto Remix),” “Scared Together,” which received a remix from producer DJ R3HAB, and got her first big break contributing Japanese lyrics and vocals to pop artist Andy’s #1 Spotify viral hit, “Distance.” Maisy Kay is excited to continue to share her gift of music with the world!

Maisy currently resides in Los Angeles and on her free time she enjoys playing video games, drawing/painting, reading, writing, aerial silk, archery, and working out at the gym. Maisy is also a huge animal lover! She has quite the menagerie of pets (a bearded dragon, frogs, cat) and also raises butterflies.

Maisy welcome to OLC! Such a pleasure to have you here. So tell me what was it like touring with Tori Kelly and performing around the UK compared to your experience on JVKE’s “What Tour Feels Like” across the United States?

Both were incredible experiences, and the JVKE tour holds a very special place in my heart, it was my first ever tour! There was something so wonderful about getting to perform in my home country. My family came out to watch and support me, and there was so much love in that venue those nights in London and Manchester, it was wonderful.

Your latest EP Wonderlust: The Dusk delves into darker and grittier elements of love. What inspired the themes and sound of this project?

I liked the idea of the darker songs of Wonderlust matching the darkening evening sky. All the songs were written beforehand, and we ended up splitting it into two separate EP’s. Dawn is a daytime album, the songs are sweet, it’s innocent, it’s the beginning of a relationship where everything is dreamy. The Dusk is the nighttime sister. It’s seductive, it’s intense. There’s a deeper bond than there was in Dusk. There’re different depths of understanding to one another. It’s darker, but it’s deeper too.

“Technicolor Honeymoon” hit #1 on the Pop Charts and #5 overall on YouTube Charts. What do you think resonated with listeners most about that song?

I think a lot of people have experienced that honeymoon phase of a relationship, where everything feels magical and like a fairytale. It’s intense, it’s seductive, it’s so joyous you can hardly even bear it!

If you’ve ever been in love, you probably know what that good ol’ honeymoon period is like.

You’ve worked with industry legends like Timbaland, Tiësto, and Rodney Jenkins. What has been the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from these collaborations?

To speak up and believe in my own ideas. It’s hard to feel worthy when you’re in a room with legends, but everyone is truly so willing and wanting to work together, and hear your thoughts and what you like and don’t. It truly is a collaborative process, and people get excited when they see you excited!

You design all your EP covers and run your own webstore. How do you balance being a musician and a visual artist?

I think about both sides of the coin at any given time, as I think both are necessary to build a piece of art. I draw a lot in my free time, and am constantly coming up with new creative ideas, so it’s very natural for me to switch between those two worlds like that.

Growing up in the UK and moving to Los Angeles has shaped your sound. How do these two cultures influence your songwriting and production style?

I think England taught me a lot, but I ultimately needed to move to America to learn more about what it means to be a “pop” writer. I’m constantly learning and evolving, I think I even come back from every tour a different artist than the person I was when I started out on it. You’re exposed to so many different cultures and experiences, and it’s very inspiring to me.

Your single “The Storm” with TheFatRat has over 31 million Spotify streams. What was it like seeing such a massive reaction to your music?

It was incredible! Especially since I was bullied for learning the language when I went to high school, it was heartwarming to finally be praised and enjoyed for it. I know 10 year old me would be incredibly proud of us.

“The Beast Within” is inspired by the fictional Na’vi language from Avatar. What draws you to incorporating fantasy into your music?

I’ve loved it ever since I was a little girl, and it’s just such a huge part of my personality. My apartment looks like a forest fairy lives in it! It brings me joy to find whimsy in a life of normalcy.

With a growing fanbase across Spotify, YouTube, and TikTok, how do you stay connected with your audience?

I try to just be authentic. I like Twitch in that way, as it’s unedited, and I can just be my regular silly self and chat to people casually. I think it’s important to remember that at the end of the day, I’m just an ordinary person!

What is your favorite venue and song to perform live, and why?

I don’t know that I have a favorite venue (yet!) but my favorite song of all time to perform on tour was definitely my cover of Running Up That Hill, the energy was always so high during those performances. As for my own songs, I always really loved getting to sing the high adlibs at the end of Love Is A God. It felt like a very cool “ta da!” moment for me.

The visuals for “Cosmically Intertwined” and “Sunlight” are stunning. How involved are you in the creative process of your music videos?

I’m very involved. Sunlight was my first time ever co-directing, and I’d drawn out storyboards for that video with a very clear vision of playing a piano in a field in a golden dress while flowers grew. I knew I wanted to be an alien that gets the guy in the end in Cosmically Intertwined. I love storytelling, and so I always like to be heavily involved in the creative process.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

Past: Freddie Mercury definitely, he’s my idol. As for present, I’m obsessed with everything Chappel Roan is doing lately. I love her flamboyance, her love for dressing up in costume, her vocals are incredible and her videos and outfits are so creative. I really look up to her in that way. I admire how she’s so honest about her mental health struggles.

With the success of Wonderlust: The Dawn and The Dusk, what’s next for you musically? Can we expect a full album soon?

Absolutely. The songs for the album have already been written, and the project has been decided. It’s incredibly exciting, and I’m so proud of what me and my team are working on. I can’t wait to show everyone!
