Prime Video is set to adapt L. Frank Baum’s beloved children’s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, into a new television series titled Dorothy. This upcoming show will distinguish itself from previous adaptations by incorporating a modern twist on the timeless story, offering a fresh perspective for contemporary audiences.
Described as a “contemporary, music-infused YA retelling,” the series will follow Dorothy Gale’s unexpected journey into the magical land of Oz. The narrative is expected to use the Yellow Brick Road as a metaphor for the struggles and decisions faced by young adults today.
According to Deadline, the show is being developed and produced by Gina Matthews, known for her work on 13 Going on 30, through her Little Engine production company. The project also boasts notable executive producers, including Grammy-winning singers Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, along with Lee Metzger of Lucky Horseshow, Grant Scharbo of Little Engine, and Patrick Moran. Details about the cast are currently under wraps.
“I’ve loved The Wizard of Oz books since childhood,” Matthews shared. “The story highlights qualities necessary to overcome difficult times, with Dorothy embodying strength and resilience. She shows us that with kindness and grit, we can achieve great things and uplift those around us. I’m excited to share that message now, more than ever.”
Stefani expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “It’s a creative and modern take on a classic story, blending music, emotion, and Dorothy’s character in an inspiring way.” Shelton added, “We’re thrilled about the potential of this show, and I’m grateful that Gina brought this idea to me and Gwen. Her creativity makes her a perfect fit for this project.”
This Wizard of Oz adaptation follows the recent success of Universal Pictures’ Wicked film, which stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. Since its release in 2024, the movie has maintained a Certified Fresh rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. Later this year, Erivo and Grande will reprise their roles in Wicked: For Good, scheduled for release on November 21.
