The first images from 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple have been unveiled. Serving as the sequel to 28 Years Later and the second installment in an upcoming trilogy, the film’s set photos were shared by Rolling Stone, offering a glimpse into the upcoming movie. Among the photos are shots of Ralph Fiennes portraying Dr. Ian Kelson and Chi Lewis-Parry as Samson—both characters who survived the events of the original film.
Returning also is Jack O’Connell as Sir Jimmy Crystal, the mysterious cult leader leading a group known as the Jimmies. One of the set images captures O’Connell walking alongside director Nia DaCosta. The story of The Bone Temple picks up shortly after 28 Years Later, which followed Spike (Alfie Williams) as he encountered Jimmy and his cult. In the new film, Spike is compelled to join Jimmy’s group, which is heading toward a confrontation with Dr. Kelson and Samson, who carries the Alpha virus.
Nia DaCosta is directing The Bone Temple, working from a screenplay by Alex Garland. DaCosta described the film as “bonkers,” while O’Connell shared that The Bone Temple blurs the lines between heroes and villains.
“This film is the weird, deranged cousin to 28 Years Later—the one you might be a bit ashamed of because of its strange, questionable interests,” O’Connell told Rolling Stone. “It emphasizes how unstoppable nature is. Ultimately, nature will take its course—whether we like it or not. I don’t think the infected are purely villains in our story. It’s going to make you think.”
Cillian Murphy is anticipated to reprise his role as Jim, one of the survivors from the original outbreak.
The film is produced by Danny Boyle, who directed both 28 Days Later and 28 Years Later, alongside Garland, Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernie Bellew.
Following its June release, 28 Years Later received mostly positive reviews and grossed over $150 million worldwide.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is set for theatrical release on January 16, 2026.
