The Review: Breaking Barriers and Building Dreams In ‘Rule Breakers’

Bill Guttentag’s Rule Breakers is a gem of a film, that left me both inspired and deeply moved. Set to release on March 7, this film tells the incredible true story of Roya Mahboob and Afghanistan’s first all-girls robotics team—a group of young visionaries who defied tradition, danger, and societal norms to chase their dreams. I loved every minute of this movie, and it’s one that deserves a much wider audience to witness its powerful message and gripping storytelling.

From the opening scenes, Guttentag—a two-time Oscar winner known for his mastery in both documentary and dramatic filmmaking—sets an urgent, heartfelt tone. The film plunges us into the harsh realities of Afghanistan between 2017 and 2019, where educating girls is not just frowned upon but seen as an act of rebellion. Nikohl Boosheri delivers a standout performance as Roya Mahboob, the fearless entrepreneur who risks everything to empower young women through STEM.

The ensemble cast shines just as brightly. Ali Fazal brings warmth and complexity as Samir, a supportive ally in Roya’s mission. The young actresses playing the robotics team members—Amber Afzali, Nina Hosseinzadeh, and Sara Malal Rowe among them—are revelations.

What I adored most about Rule Breakers is how it balances intense drama with moments of pure, unfiltered hope. Guttentag’s direction is meticulous, weaving together scenes of nail-biting tension—like the team’s encounters with disapproving elders and Taliban threats—with bursts of joy as the girls build robots and earn global recognition.

The screenplay, co-written by Guttentag, Jason Brown, and Elaha Mahboob (Roya’s sister and a real-life figure in the story), is a masterclass in pacing and emotional resonance. It never shies away from the harsh realities these girls face—misogyny, violence, and sacrifice—but it also celebrates their resilience and ingenuity.

This is a movie that demands to be seen—not just for its stellar performances or gripping narrative, but for the story it tells. It’s a testament to the power of education, courage, and unity in the face of adversity. I can’t recommend Rule Breakers enough; it’s an inspiring call to action wrapped in a beautifully crafted film. Do yourself a favor and watch it—then tell everyone you know to do the same. This incredible true story deserves to be shouted from the rooftops.
