After celebrating its 10th anniversary, the popular horror multiplayer game Dead by Daylight is making the leap to the big screen. The adaptation will be directed by Icelandic filmmaker Thordur Palsson, known for Netflix’s The Valhalla Murders and The Damned, and is a collaborative effort between Blumhouse’s Atomic Monster, Behaviour Interactive, and several production partners.
The announcement was made during a sold-out, one-day event in Montreal dedicated to fans of the game. This marks a significant milestone for the franchise, which has become renowned for its crossover with various horror icons. The game’s premise involves one player embodying a Killer hunting down four Survivors, all while trying to avoid being sacrificed to a mysterious force called the Entity. The Survivors work together to repair generators and escape through exit gates, creating a tense, cat-and-mouse gameplay experience.
Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse Atomic Monster, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “There is no better moment than the 10th anniversary to share this news. Thordur is the filmmaker we trust to carry Dead by Daylight from the screen you play on to the big screen you watch in theaters.” Blum’s colleague, James Wan, added, “One million people step into Dead by Daylight daily, and this adaptation brings them the world they love most. Thordur understands that terror only lands if you care about who’s running, and his work on The Damned shows he can make you feel the walls closing in. That’s exactly the instinct this film needs.”
Behaviour Interactive’s Chief Product Officer Stephen Mulrooney praised Palsson’s storytelling skills, emphasizing his “atmospheric storytelling and ability to build tension,” making him the ideal director to bring the game’s universe to life for both longtime fans and newcomers.
The film is being produced by Wan, Blum, and Mulrooney, with executive producers including Remi Racine (Behaviour Interactive), Michael Clear and Judson Scott (Atomic Monster), Ryan Turek (Blumhouse), and Russell Binder (Striker Entertainment). Fans can look forward to a horror film that aims to capture the intense, immersive atmosphere that has made Dead by Daylight a beloved franchise.
