Daniel Kaluuya is set to make his return to live-action filmmaking after a four-year hiatus. The Oscar-winning actor has joined Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming movie The Parlay, reuniting with acclaimed director Shaka King, with whom he previously collaborated on the 2021 film Judas and the Black Messiah.
This project holds particular significance for Kaluuya, as it marks his first major live-action role since his appearance in Jordan Peele’s Nope in 2022. Judas and the Black Messiah was not only a critical success but also earned Kaluuya his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, in which he portrayed revolutionary activist Fred Hampton. The film also garnered a Best Picture nomination for King, who served as a producer.
Since then, Kaluuya has taken on supporting roles, including voicing Hobie Brown (Spider-Punk) in the 2023 hit Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and co-directing the film The Kitchen. Details about The Parlay’s plot remain under wraps, but it is anticipated to be a crime thriller.
In addition to The Parlay, Kaluuya is involved in several other projects. He will star in A24’s Hotel Hotel Hotel Hotel, a thriller directed by Michael Shanks about a man trapped in a mysterious hotel trying to escape. He’s also set to appear in Misty Green, directed by Chris Rock. Furthermore, Kaluuya is co-writing a Spider-Punk movie for Sony Pictures Animation and producing a live-action adaptation of Barney under his own production banner.
As of now, there is no official release date announced for The Parlay. Fans can look forward to Kaluuya’s upcoming return to the big screen alongside his continued work behind the scenes.
