Netflix is reportedly broadening its slate of video game adaptations, partnering with acclaimed producer Shawn Levy to develop a live-action series based on the popular Japanese role-playing franchise, Persona. The streaming giant is enlisting one of its most successful production collaborators to bring this beloved property to life.

According to sources cited by Variety, Christopher Monfette has been tapped to write the series and serve as executive producer and showrunner. Monfette’s previous work includes writing credits for 12 Monkeys, Star Trek: Picard, and 9-1-1. He is also involved as a writer and co-executive producer on the upcoming Marvel Disney+ series VisionQuest.

Levy, along with Dan Levine and Robert Atwood, will executive produce through their production company, 21 Laps, known for creating Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things. Additional executive producers include Dmitri M. Johnson, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Michael Lawrence Goldberg from Story Kitchen, as well as SEGA’s Toru Nakahara. 21 Laps currently maintains an overall TV deal with Netflix, with Emily Feher overseeing the project on behalf of the streamer.

The Persona franchise has cultivated a dedicated global fanbase since its debut in 1996 with Revelations: Persona. The series comprises six main entries and 15 spin-offs, featuring stories centered on Japanese high school students who juggle everyday life and friendships while battling supernatural threats. The franchise continues to expand, with reports confirming the development of Persona 6 in June 2026. The latest release, Persona 5: The Phantom X, launched in 2025, and Persona 4 Revival is set for release in February 2027.
This adaptation would join Netflix’s growing collection of video game-inspired movies and series, which includes successes like The Witcher, Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.

Recently, 21 Laps wrapped production on the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, a series that helped establish Netflix Originals as major cultural phenomena. Shawn Levy, who is involved in the Persona project, also directed and co-wrote blockbuster hits like Deadpool and Wolverine, and Netflix’s recent hit film Backrooms.
