Apple TV has unveiled the official teaser trailer for Being Heumann, the upcoming biographical drama starring Mark Ruffalo. The first look arrives just days before the film makes its world premiere at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival on September 10.
Directed by Sian Heder, Being Heumann is based on Judith Heumann’s acclaimed memoir, Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist. Heder previously earned widespread acclaim for Tallulah and CODA, the latter winning her the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The film is set to open the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival before arriving in select theaters on November 6. It will then make its streaming debut on Apple TV on November 13.
Being Heumann tells the remarkable story of Judy Heumann, widely regarded as the “Mother of the Disability Rights Movement.” A lifelong civil rights activist, Heumann dedicated her career to fighting discrimination against people with disabilities and played a major role in shaping legislation and policies designed to protect the rights of children and adults with disabilities.
The newly released teaser introduces Ruth Madeley as Heumann, highlighting her determination to challenge a system that has long ignored the needs and rights of the disability community. The footage follows Heumann as she organizes and inspires a group of young adults to stand up against discrimination.
One of the teaser’s most powerful moments shows Heumann and her fellow activists occupying a federal building as they demand meaningful action. They refuse to back down until a government bureaucrat, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, agrees to address their demands.
Apple TV describes the film as a “revolutionary, irreverent and deeply human story” about an unlikely group of people determined to accomplish the impossible and transform the lives of millions.
Alongside Madeley and Ruffalo, the cast includes Dylan O’Brien, Madeline Delp, Rob Delaney, Ray Fisher, and several others.
With its focus on one of the most important figures in the disability rights movement, Being Heumann is shaping up to be an inspiring drama about activism, resilience, and the fight for equality.
