Hulu is moving forward with Durango, a new crime thriller starring Cooper Hoffman and Kathryn Newton, after officially ordering the series seven months after its pilot was announced. The upcoming drama will also feature Merritt Wever, Mason Gooding and Abbey Lee.
Created by Eliza Clark, known for her work on Y: The Last Man and Animal Kingdom, the series promises a chaotic mix of crime, romance and questionable decisions as two unlikely lovers find themselves on the run.
Hoffman, best known for his breakout performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza, will star as Mikey, a local ski bum chasing his next thrill. Newton, who has appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Freaky, will play Bunny, a homeschooled runaway who works as a waitress at a small diner.
According to the series’ official premise, Mikey and Bunny fall in love while becoming entangled in a dangerous situation that puts them on the radar of police and criminals alike. Their increasingly reckless journey is further complicated by the involvement of Mikey’s wife, forcing the pair to navigate a growing web of trouble as they pursue their own version of the American dream.
Wever will portray Joni, a sharp-witted local detective who has spent two decades working in a relatively quiet resort town. When an unusually significant case lands on her desk, she finds herself facing the biggest challenge of her career.
Gooding will play Miles, a young detective whose intelligence and quick tongue make him an intriguing counterpart to Joni. Meanwhile, Lee will portray Irina, Mikey’s Russian wife, who has a fascination with American pop culture and is determined to secure US citizenship.
Behind the scenes, Clark will serve as writer, creator and executive producer. She will be joined by Media Res executives Michael Ellenberg and Christina Malach, alongside Chris Storer, Josh Senior and Tyson Bidner through American Light & Fixture. Storer is best known as the creator of the acclaimed series The Bear. Jesse Peretz directed and executive produced the pilot.
Durango is produced by 20th Television and Media Res, marking another major scripted project for Hulu as the streamer continues to expand its slate of original dramas.
With its combination of a volatile romance, criminal pursuits and a cast of compelling characters, Durango could offer viewers a fresh take on the crime thriller genre. A premiere date and further details about the series have yet to be announced.
