This June, the Spanish Film Festival is back at Luna Leederville and Luna on SX, bringing a sizzling lineup of cinematic gems from Spain and Latin America. Running throughout the month, the festival promises to captivate audiences with its rich storytelling, bold visuals, and cultural flair. From quirky thrillers to heartfelt dramas, this year’s program is a vibrant celebration of Spanish-language cinema, and it’s set to light up Perth’s winter nights.
The festival kicks off in style on Thursday, June 12, at Luna Leederville with an Opening Night Reception for Samana Sunrise. Doors open at 6:15 PM, with the film screening at 7:00 PM. Expect a lively evening featuring a live Mariachi band, delicious food from Pinchos, and refreshing drinks to set the tone for the festival. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in the vibrant spirit of Spanish-language cinema.

One of the festival’s highlights is the Australian premiere of El Jockey, a stylish and unconventional thriller directed by Luis Ortega, known for his acclaimed work on El Ángel. This absurdist tale delves into the chaotic life of Remo Manfredini (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart), a legendary jockey whose self-destructive tendencies threaten to unravel his career and personal life. His partner, Abril (Úrsula Corberó, Money Heist), is an ambitious jockey pregnant with Remo’s child, navigating her own path to success in the high-stakes world of horse racing. Both ride for Sirena (Daniel Giménez Cacho), a ruthless mobster with a hold over Remo’s past.
The film has already garnered critical acclaim, winning the Horizontes Latinos Award at the 2024 San Sebastián International Film Festival and a Special Mention for the Edipo Re Award at the Venice Film Festival, along with a nomination for Best Film in the Queer Lion category.

The Spanish Film Festival has a knack for showcasing stories that are as diverse as they are compelling, blending humor, heart, and edge-of-your-seat drama. El Jockey is just one of many films that promise to leave audiences buzzing, with its fresh perspective and standout performances. The festival’s curated selection spans genres and styles, offering something for everyone—whether you’re a cinephile or simply looking for a unique night out.
Luna Palace Cinemas, with its intimate and iconic venues at Leederville and SX, provides the perfect backdrop for this cultural celebration. Get your tickets here!
