AJ Mitchell Finds “Flowers On The Moon”

AJ Mitchell takes his fans a step further on his journey to As Far As The Eyes Can See, his upcoming new album, with the release of his cathartic new single and music video, “Flowers On The Moon.” The new release follows recent singles “Passionate” and “Foolish,” as Mitchell continues to bring fans into the world of his sophomore effort.

AJ Mitchell’s new single is a hopeless love story, punctuated by the dreadful revelation in its chorus—“You’re beautiful, but we just won’t make it through”—as he describes an intense romance that appears to have a devastatingly low ceiling. It’s a theme that’s been strung along dutifully over the course of Mitchell’s three recent singles; “Passionate” explored his curiosity for a fiery encounter, while “Foolish” left him wondering whether the reward was worth the risk. On “Flowers On The Moon,” woven over a mellow piano melody, continues that track, and finds our protagonist taking stock of the damage.

The song’s music video, directed by Yulya and Marita Shadrinsky (of the recent Marc Jacobs x LIl Uzi Vert campaign), points to these themes subtly. Set in a recent “wedding in Paris,” Mitchell and his friends appear to be having a blast of a time. However, from a bouquet toss gone wrong to the accidental beheading of the wedding cake’s groom figurine, there’s a clear undertone of hopelessness in both people and love. At the video’s conclusion, you’re left unsure whether Mitchell considers either entity worth saving.

“I went to Paris for a friend’s wedding expecting a beautiful and magical moment. Unfortunately, It was everything but that. It was chaotic, messy and unpredictable,” says AJ Mitchell of his new video. “Every second there’s something that goes wrong almost as if it’s a sign from the universe that things will continue to get worse until you part ways.”

The release of “Flowers On The Moon” continues to set the stage for As Far As The Eye Can See. The cinematic album unfolds as a true coming-of-age. Tracing all the stages of a relationship from infatuation to eventual dissolve, the 22-year-old says that after knowingly dating someone that wasn’t good for him, he felt compelled to, “Go ‘as far as the eye can see,’ where there’s nothing blocking my vision, where I’m free to create.”
