Sarah Snook is set to make her return to television in a new limited series that reimagines Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller, more than sixty years after its original release. Inspired by Daphne du Maurier’s 1952 short story and Hitchcock’s 1963 film, the series establishes its own distinct identity, shifting the setting to contemporary-day Alaska. Instead of the familiar Bodega Bay locale, the story unfolds in an isolated, snow-covered town, adding a fresh and tense atmosphere.

Snook will portray Myra Massey, a traveling magistrate who returns home expecting to settle a simple case. Her plans are disrupted when she discovers the body of her childhood friend, shot and pierced by bullets. As reported by Deadline, what initially appears to be a murder investigation quickly escalates into a fight for survival. Myra takes it upon herself to go beyond her judicial role to uncover the truth, especially as unexplained bird attacks begin to threaten her, leaving her trapped in a perilous environment where danger is lurking both on the ground and in the sky.

This adaptation marks a significant departure from the original film’s protagonist, Melanie Daniels, who waited for rescue. In this version, Myra understands that no one is coming to save her, emphasizing her resilience and resourcefulness.

The series is penned by Tom Spezialy, known for his work on The Leftovers and Watchmen. David Heyman, the producer behind the Harry Potter franchise, is on board as an executive producer through his Heyday Television banner, alongside Snook and Jennifer Gabler Rawlings. During a panel at SXSW London in June 2025, Sue Gibbs, Head of Development at Heyday, explained that the project is rooted in the original source material, drawing inspiration from Daphne du Maurier’s novella. She highlighted the contemporary relevance of the story’s theme, noting that it explores the consequences of nature turning against humanity—a timely reflection amid ongoing climate change.

While the project has generated excitement, the release date for The Birds limited series has not yet been announced.
