A beloved 1980s animated series is gearing up for a live-action revival, thanks to a collaboration between Hasbro, Jonathan Nolan, and Amazon. The original show, created by Christy Marx, aired for three seasons starting in 1985 before its cancellation. Now, these entertainment giants are teaming up to bring back the iconic franchise as a live-action TV series, according to Deadline.
The original “Jem and The Holograms” debuted during the height of the MTV music video era, capturing the imaginations of young viewers. The series centered around Jerrica Benton, a music company owner, and her alter-ego Jem, the charismatic lead singer of the rock band Jem and The Holograms. Each episode featured a mix of storylines and music videos, including the memorable theme song, “Truly Outrageous.”
During its run, the animated series became one of the most popular cartoons of its time, surpassing even giants like “Transformers” and “He-Man” in viewership. Its cultural impact persisted long after cancellation, with fans engaging through album releases, comic books, and the annual JemCon fan convention, now celebrating its 20th year. In 2015, Universal Pictures attempted to revive Jem with a live-action film directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Aubrey Peeples as Jem. Unfortunately, the movie was a commercial and critical failure, earning just over $2 million against a $5 million budget and receiving poor reviews—scoring only 22% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The upcoming live-action “Jem and The Holograms” series from Amazon and Hasbro aims to reignite the franchise’s popularity. Executive producers Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan are leading the project alongside Gabriel Marano. While an official release date has not yet been announced, fans are eager to see the return of this nostalgic favorite.
