Ryan Murphy, the acclaimed creator behind numerous hit series, has announced the release date for his latest project, The Shards. Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ popular 2021 thriller novel of the same name, the new TV series is set to premiere on August 5, 2026, on FX and Hulu. Produced by 20th Television and Ryan Murphy Productions, the series promises to delve into themes of obsession, seduction, and suspense.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of 1981 Los Angeles, The Shards centers around 17-year-old Bret Easton Ellis during his final year at the prestigious Buckley School. The story takes a dark turn with the arrival of a mysterious student, Robert Mallory, whose presence coincides with a serial killer known as The Trawler.

The official synopsis describes the series as: “Set against the vivid backdrop of 1980s Los Angeles, the series follows a group of privileged high school seniors at an elite prep school as they navigate identity, sex, jealousy, obsession, and the lurking dangers beneath American adolescence.”

The cast features notable talents including Igby Rigney, Homer Gere, Kaia Gerber, Hayes Warner, and Graham Campbell. Wes Bentley, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jordan Roth also have key roles. The show is executive produced by Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Bret Easton Ellis, Eric Kovtun, and Scott Robertson, along with additional producers Nissa Diederich, Tanase Popa, Nick Hall, Michael Uppendahl, Max Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, and Brian Young.

The Shards joins other recent FX adaptations of popular books, such as The Beauty, a body horror series based on the Image Comics title released earlier this year. FX has a history of successful book-to-screen adaptations, including the 2024 series Shōgun, based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, and 2023’s Justified: City Primeval, based on Elmore Leonard’s 1980 crime novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit.
