Pop girlies, it’s here. Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan have finally joined forces, and the “expectations” remix just dropped, along with a music video starring both of them.

A First for Both Stars

This is history on two fronts. The new version of “expectations” is Rodrigo’s first-ever remix, and it marks Roan’s first-ever feature. The original track comes from Rodrigo’s third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, which opened at No. 1 when it arrived in June.

Behind the boards is Dan Nigro, the producer both artists have worked with for years and the man who helmed the original. The companion video was directed by Bardia Zeinali.

Rodrigo teased the team-up earlier this week with a snippet of Roan’s voice purring, “Oh, Olivia does remixes now,” before making it official on October 13 and saying she was “beyond excited” to share it. The cover art, shot by Phoenix Johnson, shows the pair perched on a yellow convertible in full ’80s glam, with a license plate that reads “XPECT8NS.”

The remix is the fourth single from the album, following “Drop Dead,” “The Cure” and “Stupid Song.” The original “expectations” was already a fan favorite, and now it has a second voice that turns a solo confession into a full-on duet between two friends who know exactly what it’s like to live with the world’s expectations.

Physical copies are coming too, with limited-edition 7-inch vinyl, CDs and cassettes available through both artists’ stores.

Friends First, Collaborators Now

This pairing has been a long time coming. Roan opened for Rodrigo on the Sour Tour in 2022 and returned as a supporting act on the Guts World Tour in 2024. After Roan’s own global breakout later that year, the two reunited on stage in Los Angeles to sing “Hot To Go!” together.

In August, Roan played Rodrigo’s first Daisy Chain Fields festival in Irvine, California, which raised $20 million for organizations supporting women and girls. Rodrigo has called Roan a source of advice on “taking care of myself and being me in an industry that’s so overwhelming sometimes.”

The timing is big for both. Rodrigo is in the middle of her sold-out Unraveled Tour, which has sold more than a million tickets, and Roan is gearing up for her own charity weekend in Los Angeles later this month, with net ticket proceeds going to The Midwest Princess Project, her nonprofit for trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities.

Two of pop’s biggest voices, one song and a convertible full of ’80s attitude. Press play, then press it again.
