Olivia Rodrigo has emphasized that her new song, The Cure, is not related to the legendary band The Cure, despite sharing the same title. The 23-year-old pop star has a close connection with the band’s frontman, Robert Smith, having performed with him at Glastonbury Festival last year and maintaining a friendly relationship.
During her appearance on the Elvis Duran Show on May 21, Olivia explained: “Honestly, this song, ‘The Cure,’ has nothing to do with the band. Although I love it so much, it just is a happy coincidence.” She also shared that the song represents a new perspective she hasn’t expressed in her previous albums, reflecting her growth and maturity.
Olivia also reassured fans of her friendship with Robert Smith, saying, “I love him. We talk like, every week. He’s amazing.” Robert Smith has previously expressed his admiration for Olivia’s music, revealing he bought her first two albums, Sour and Guts, on CD. He noted that while many songs on those albums aren’t directly aimed at him, he finds them so compelling that he can’t help but love them.
He added, “She calls me up quite a bit to talk about clothes and fashion – and we have enjoyed a couple of memorable nights in the studio together… I can’t wait to hear what she does next.”
Olivia has also shared her affection for The Cure song, calling it one of her favorites. On Instagram, she wrote, “The Cure comes out this Friday. It’s my favorite song on the album and one of my favorite songs I’ve ever made. Couldn’t be more excited for you guys to hear it…”
The Cure is the second single from her upcoming album You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love, following her April release of the track Drop Dead, and serves as a follow-up to her 2023 album Guts. The new single explores themes of jealousy and longing, inspired by her first “big girl” relationship.
In conversations with Audacy Check In, Olivia revealed that her third album is “experimental” and features many “sad love songs.” She explained that her romantic experiences, including her recent relationship with Geese frontman Cameron Winter and the end of her previous two-year relationship with Louis Partridge, influenced her songwriting.
“I think the challenge for me was to write songs about romantic love positively,” she said. “When I set out to write this album, I was really in love — my first ‘big girl’ relationship — and writing a song about happiness is a lot harder than writing a song about heartbreak. It was about challenging myself to make a love song while also exploring negative feelings like longing, yearning, jealousy, and missing someone.”
The album’s title originated from a conversation Olivia had with her producer, Dan Nigro. She recounted: “I was talking with Dan, and he said, ‘Oh, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love,’ and I thought, ‘That’s it. That’s going to be the album title.’ I’m really happy with it. It captures the core of what I wanted to express.”
You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So In Love is set to be released on June 12.
