INsiders Guide: Brother Leo, Kate Gillespie, Jade The Moon and Mackenta

“Sweden’s next big thing? Shine is an instantly hummable deceptively dark pop anthem. ” – Idolator

Named after Svensson’s more confident and free childhood imaginary twin, Brother Leo officially made his worldwide debut in 2018. The dynamic nature of the music aligns with his rather unbelievable story. Long before his emergence as Brother Leo, mom forced her son born Ola to participate in boys’ choir and take piano lessons when all he “really cared about was football.” At only 17, he played professional soccer for former UEFA-cup team Trelleborgs FF. After singing during a school function, friends clamored for him to audition for Pop Idol. Despite his reluctance, he ended up landing a deal in his native Sweden as a result. Unlocking a quirky, clever, and catchy signature style, Ola achieved a string of number ones off the back of his Swedish debut before making his bones as an in-demand songwriter with cuts for gnash, Hailee Steinfeld, Akon, and more under his given name. He assumed the identity of Brother Leo in 2018 and began writing and recording with Mark Ralph [Clean Bandit, Years & Years, Jax Jones], Coffee [Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Justin Bieber], Dan Grech [Lana Del Rey, Liam Gallagher, George Ezra], and more.

Kate Gillespie announces her latest single, “New York”. Produced by Nashville producer and mixing engineer Collin Pastor (Lucy Dacus, Boy Genius, Illuminati Hotties), the song is an elevated extension of her previous single Not Having Fun, released in July of last year. New York is about the conflicting emotions of finding out that you’re the other woman after you’ve already fallen too deep into the relationship to want to leave. In this full band arrangement featuring a solid cast of Nashville session musicians, Kate’s music is taken to new heights with a heavy backbeat, the haunting sounds of echoing guitars and brutal honesty within her storytelling.

Kate Gillespie is an indie/folk singer-songwriter from Toronto, Ontario. During her adolescent years, Kate attended an arts school located in downtown Toronto. This passion for all things creative led Kate to devote her time to songwriting, collaborating, and performing with other Toronto natives. When she was thirteen years old, her Dad took her on a trip to Nashville, based on their shared love for country music. In August of 2014, Kate moved to Nashville to pursue her musical career. A few years later, in September of 2017, she released her debut EP, titled “Pink and Gold,”. The album gained quick success on Spotify, with over 700,000 streams on the title track and 1.5 million streams on the EP overall. Kate’s music is every bit of hope and heartbreak that her soul has lived and breathed.

Her transparent and vulnerable writing complements her poetic storytelling, finger picking, and witty persona to create something truly special. Kates music has the power to lift people up and heal them, just as it has always done for her.

The question remains, Do you ever feel a little awkward? Well this anthem is for all of us, and is presented by rising band Jade The Moon. “Awkward” is a fun and infectious track about embracing the things that make us special. The track was written in the spirit of celebrating one’s quirky nature. Its upbeat tempo helps translate the message that it’s okay to be weird. After all, being unique is so beautiful.

“Dawn” is the latest release for up and coming singer Mackenta. On the single she says “I’ve noticed a common theme throughout my past relationships. Both parties weren’t really ready for something serious yet boundaries weren’t established, therefore causing a lack of respect. “Dawn” is about falling for someone that you know won’t work in the long run, but letting it happen anyways”. “I felt a lot of mixed emotions while writing “Dawn.” Nostalgia over the good memories and potential, resentment about not being something more, shame over allowing the situation to escalate so far. I’m telling it from my point of view, so there’s a sense of blame towards this person who is not mature enough to take things seriously; but also realizing that I’m equally to blame for not drawing the line or understanding my own intentions. Ultimately, it’s about two people who both need to heal before they could ever be together” she continued.
