INsiders Guide: DEVORA, Bailey, BAYEM, Courtney Govan, Milo Merah…

With influences that range from Nine Inch Nails to Dolly Parton, and a touch of Lana Del Rey thrown in for good measure – genre bending Outlaw Pop artist DEVORA has released a new EP “God Is Dead” via Tiger Tone Records / [PIAS].  She is also slated to tour with BUSH in February (dates below).

The EP contains four songs, with previously unreleased track Bonesaw” leading the way. DEVORA says of the ominously enchanting track: “Bonesaw” is about a night in a motel room gone wrong, in a dark direction. It’s a voyeuristic impression of the lines between romance and impulse being heavily blurred. The song opens with seemingly illusive pretty snapshots of an all-American day dream, but progressively turns morose and ends with a bonesaw left in the motel room sink. I used to read a lot of medical textbooks as a hobby and one of the surgical tools from the civil war era, the bonesaw, always intrigued me. I have a couple of vintage ones at home”. The music video was directed by Felicity Jayn Heath.

She continues: “A lot of my songs take place in motel rooms. There’s something really macabre and eerily temporary about a motel room where, for essentially 24 hours, you can be whoever you want to be in that room sealed and removed from the outside world… It’s like your own revolving set. What happens in that room stays in that room. A lot of serial killers have set up shop in motel rooms and I know I’ve definitely walked into some gnarly motel rooms where I’ve gotten hit with this feeling – like getting punched in the gut, where I’ve started to put the pieces together that something really messed up must have happened in this room… “Bonesaw” is all of the above”.

The EP, produced by Alex Aldi (Passion Pit, Holy Ghost!) and Cass Dillon (Goo Goo Dolls, Grey Daze) and mixed by Tony Hoffer (M83, Beck), is a collection of stories Inspired by true events that paint a picture of a modern Wild West culture. The songs are a haunting ode to the dark side of the American Dream. Gone are the days of the white-picket fences and beauty pageant queens; they’ve left long ago and made way for a new form of cultural anarchy, non-conformist beliefs and a generation of outlaws like DEVORA.

DEVORA’s debut EP, Outlaw, celebrated life in the fast lane, offering an inner glimpse into a mad world of exile and rebellion, love and lawlessness. It was her first installment of a fierce collective of stories and art that illustrate a perfect portrait of her dark wild west. The EP saw support at radio, peaking top five on the SubModern Commercial Specialty Charts, and press write-ups at places like AltPressINKED, and Earmilk. DEVORA has amassed more than 3 million cumulative audio streams of her music to date. She has been honing her live show chops with solo dates in the Southern California area, along with direct support dates on a national tour with The Warning in the spring of 2022.

Tiger Tone Records was welcomed into the [PIAS] family in late 2020 and puts them among the company of revered indie labels such as TransgressiveHeavenly Recordings and Bella Union. Tony Hoffer is celebrated for an illustrious career spanning decades working with distinguished artists such as M83, PhoenixBeckThe KooksThe Snuts and many more.

Bailey was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and grew up with a variety of different musical influences, including the sounds she heard on Beale Street. She began singing at six under the guidance of the late and great vocal coach Bob Westbrook (Britney Spears, ‘N Sync, Lucy Hale). After attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Bailey moved back home, where she has honed her skills as a writer working with the best in the industry. Her father, who was a hugely influential figure in her life, and his love of 70’s music, Barry White, and smooth jazz, continue to impact the music Bailey writes today.

A burgeoning new crooner on the scene, Bailey has shown off a more personal side to her artistry after the release of her first single last holiday season. With more to come following the release of “Closer,” be sure to follow Bailey on Instagram @handleofbailey and stream her music on all major music platforms.

BAYEM is a German-American modern pop artist. Following the cumulative million-streaming successes of his acclaimed singles “Pressure”, “Thrill”, and “Joyride”, BAYEM released his 8-song 2022 project AFTERGLOW, and subsequent singles “Bad For You” and the thrilling new “Demonize”. In summer 2022, BAYEM’s single “Pressure” was featured in the season finale of The Kardashians, leading to a 30,000% increase in Shazams of his music. He has been cited as one of music’s most promising up-and-coming artists by multiple influential online press outlets, with Indianapolis Star music journalist David Lindquist adding that, “…BAYEM sets a new standard for smooth…”

Courtney Govan is an independent queer pop singer from San Diego, California, known for playing the “Auditor” on season 1 of “I Can See Your Voice” on FOX.  Her original song Serotonin went viral on TikTok and landed Courtney on her first Spotify editorial playlist; Fresh Finds Pop: Best of 2021. Courtney has amassed over 2 million streams across all streaming platforms in just two years.

On October 4, Courtney will release her new single, “sofa,” an uplifting and energetic bop that channels the buzz of a new crush and reminds listeners that sometimes the moment matters more than the ending.

Her introspective approach to songwriting brings a refreshing twist to today’s pop music. With human empowerment in mind, Courtney uses her own life experiences to connect with her listeners and hopefully help them through the tough stuff that life throws their way.

Praised by Sugababes’ Mutya Buena for his soulful voice, Milo Merah is back with his
sophomore single Linger, distributed via AWAL on all streaming platforms on January 25,
2023.

As much of a fan of D’Angelo as James Blake, Tame Impala or Jeff Buckley, the genre-
bending artist who grew up on alternative, electronic and R&B music has also been

nurturing from a very young age a profound love for poetry that he now pours onto his
songs. Following his debut Hidden Desires released last year, the poignant Linger drapes
Milo’s richly textured vocals with a melancholic sonic veil produced by AUR3LIAN and
Homebodi who created a somber yet elegant canvas for his emotions. What starts as a
delicate number scattered with doubts about his relationship, slowly and sadly grows into a
stronger ineluctable feeling that they’re reaching the end of the road. “The song is about
my struggle to reconcile a relationship that was broken. I tried to fight for us, clinging onto
old memories, but when I looked into her eyes I just knew she didn’t feel the same love
anymore. At this point it became a war between my head and heart, Milo Merah confides.
I’ve found that when things aren’t working – relationships can get toxic. Those toxic feelings
can translate into intense physical intimacy, sometimes leading to a greater sense of loss. In
the end, there was just a lingering sense of inevitability that the end was near, but she still
left me to linger until I had the courage to say it was over.” The track will be accompanied
with a visualizer to be unveiled at the end of the month, representing his journey of trying to
cling onto what they used to be.

After touching the hearts of BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing, Kiss FM, Reprezent Radio,
Spotify, Apple, Amazon Music and even Shy FX, it’s safe to say that Milo Merah’s Linger will
not leave your thoughts for a while…
