A Live Action ‘The Phantom’ TV Show In The Works

A live-action TV series based on The Phantom is currently in development, with producer Reginald Hudlin at the helm. According to Variety, Hudlin, known for his work on Django Unchained, will direct and produce the show for King Features. The series will be based on Lee Falk’s classic comic strip.

C.J. Kettler, president of King Features, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “The development of a live-action series for the iconic comic strip ‘The Phantom’ signifies a significant expansion to resonate with today’s cultural landscape. Partnering with award-nominated director Reginald Hudlin, who has a deep respect for the comic industry and the source material, we are confident this adaptation will satisfy both longtime fans and new audiences worldwide.”

First published in 1936, The Phantom follows a masked vigilante who fights crime in Bangalla, a fictional African nation. Also known as “The Ghost Who Walks,” The Phantom is recognized as one of the earliest costumed superheroes. Remarkably, the comic strip remains active to this day. Hudlin has a background in comics, having co-founded Milestone Media and written Black Panther issues for Marvel.

In addition to his comic book work, Hudlin is an accomplished filmmaker. He received an Academy Award nomination for producing Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. His directing credits include the 1992 film Boomerang, the 2022 documentary Sidney, and the 2023 holiday film Candy Cane Lane.

The Phantom has seen multiple adaptations over the years. One of the most notable was the 1996 film starring Billy Zane, which, despite flopping at the box office, gained a cult following. In 2014, producers Mark Gordon and Drew Simon attempted to develop a new Phantom movie, but the project never materialized.

Television adaptations include a 1961 unaired pilot and the 1990s animated series Phantom 2040. Rumors also circulated about Netflix developing a Phantom series, but the streaming service never confirmed any plans.
