The Review: Descent into Moral Compromise In ‘The Talent’

The Talent, directed by Polo Menárguez and co-written with Fernando León de Aranoa, is a sleek, tension-filled drama. It follows Elsa (Ester Expósito), a gifted young cellist from a once-privileged but now financially crumbling family. At her best friend Idoia’s lavish high-society birthday party in a luxurious hotel, Elsa’s world fractures with a desperate phone call from her mother. Suddenly, she faces an impossible choice: sacrifice her dignity to a powerful, predatory figure (Pedro Casablanc) who offers salvation for her family and her musical future, or watch everything collapse.

At its core, the film probes timely questions of power imbalances, class fragility, gender dynamics, and the cost of ambition. How far would you go for your family or your dreams when the system demands your body as currency? These elements land with discomforting relevance, especially in the wake of #MeToo conversations, and the script smartly contrasts Elsa’s vulnerability with the entitled hedonism around her.

The standout is undoubtedly Ester Expósito. Shedding her Élite image, she delivers a magnetic, layered performance that carries the film. She portrays Elsa’s shift from poised privilege to fractured despair with real conviction. Pedro Casablanc complements her as the chillingly paternalistic antagonist.

Yet, for all its stylistic polish and strong central turns, The Talent often feels constrained by its own setup. The central dilemma, once established, circles familiar territory without enough fresh insight or narrative surprise. Overall, The Talent is a competent, mounted drama that entertains and provokes thought, buoyed by Expósito’s breakout-caliber work and Menárguez’s assured direction. It’s not the revelatory masterpiece, but it’s a solid showcase of Spanish cinema’s interest in uncomfortable ethical tightropes.
