Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert Provide Update on Next Project

The directing duo known as Daniels—Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert—have shared new details about their highly anticipated follow-up to the 2022 hit Everything Everywhere All at Once. In an interview with Collider, conducted during SXSW while promoting his new documentary The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist, Daniel Kwan revealed plans for their next project.

Kwan indicated that they aim to begin filming this summer, with a targeted release date set for November 2027, provided everything proceeds smoothly. He expressed optimism about the process, emphasizing their approach to creating meaningful work that reflects current global complexities.

“We’re about to shoot this summer, and it is coming out, if all things go to plan, next November of 2027. The only thing you need to know is we are trying to do what we have always done, which is listen very deeply to what is happening in the world and try to internalize that and make something really fun and entertaining that kind of reflects that story back to the world,” Kwan explained. He added that the reason for the extended timeline is the intricate and nuanced nature of today’s world, which requires time to process and translate into their filmmaking.

Kwan also provided some insight into the nature of the new project, describing it as “a sci-fi, action comedy with a big heart” that will continue to explore existential themes similar to their previous work. “Again, it’s going to be fun sci-fi, action comedy with a big heart. Very existential. All those things that you would hope that one of our movies would be. But as the world gets more complex, I believe one of my jobs as a storyteller is to meet the world where it’s at,” he said.

Everything Everywhere All at Once was a monumental success for A24 Films, grossing over $140 million worldwide—a record for the studio—and earning over 260 awards. It is widely regarded as one of the most awarded films of all time, winning seven Oscars at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing.
