In the crowded landscape of modern pop, few acts arrive with a story as cinematic as Midnight Til Morning. The trans-Pacific boyband—comprising Americans Shane Appell and Zach Newbould alongside Australians Conor Smith and Mason Watts—has swiftly captured global attention with their infectious blend of hook-heavy pop and anthemic rock. Often shortened to MTM, the quartet trades in tight harmonies, raw chemistry, and a sound that feels both nostalgic for the boyband golden era and fresh for today’s streaming generation.

Each member entered the music world as solo artists, honing their craft through independent releases, live gigs, and social media breakthroughs before fate intervened. Shane Appell, a charismatic 22-year-old from the US, built a following with his soulful vocals and emotive delivery. Zach Newbould, also 22 and American, stood out for his powerhouse range and heartfelt songwriting. On the Australian side, 23-year-old Conor Smith brought sharp pop instincts and stage presence forged in local scenes, while 26-year-old Mason Watts delivered heartfelt ballads rooted in his solo touring experience. What united them wasn’t a shared hometown but a shared hunger for something bigger than solo pursuits.
That “something bigger” materialized in 2024 on Netflix’s reality competition Building the Band. The series threw 50 aspiring artists into blind auditions, where contestants selected potential bandmates based purely on vocal chemistry heard through a soundproof booth. Shane, Zach, Conor, and Mason each auditioned individually—Shane with Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control,” Zach with Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things,” Conor with Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License,” and Mason with The Script’s “Breakeven”—never imagining they’d end up in the same group.
By episode four, the four strangers had “liked” one another’s voices enough to step into the same room for the first time. Their initial rehearsal of Coldplay’s “Higher Power” sparked instant magic. What followed was a whirlwind of late-night bonding sessions, shared living quarters, and high-stakes performances that transformed four individuals into a tight-knit unit. They chose the name Midnight Til Morning to capture the all-night energy of their creative sparks and the promise of new beginnings at dawn.
Throughout the competition, Midnight Til Morning delivered show-stopping covers—including Billie Eilish’s “Ocean Eyes,” Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris,” Hoobastank’s “The Reason,” and Post Malone’s “Circles”—earning praise for their onstage synergy and emotional depth. Though they placed fourth overall and didn’t claim the top prize, the exposure proved life-changing. Fans worldwide fell for their authenticity, and the band members realized they had found something rare: genuine brotherhood.
Emerging from the Netflix bubble, the group wasted no time making their union permanent. Just weeks after filming wrapped, they signed with Chugg Music and relocated to Sydney for intensive songwriting camps. The shift from performing covers under competition pressure to crafting originals felt liberating. “We couldn’t imagine doing this alone,” Shane later reflected, underscoring how the show’s shared trials forged an unbreakable bond that now fuels every decision.
The result of those sessions is Afterglow, their highly anticipated debut EP released on October 8, 2025. Clocking in at seven tracks and just under 20 minutes, the project bursts with bright, hook-laden pop while dipping into darker, more introspective territory—mirroring the emotional rollercoaster of their rapid rise. From late-night drives and young love to the bittersweet ache of life on the road, Afterglow serves as both a snapshot of their journey and a love letter to the fans who supported them from the first blind audition.

What elevates the EP even further is its impressive songwriting pedigree. The band co-wrote every track alongside elite collaborators, including Amy Allen (known for hits with Harry Styles, Sabrina Carpenter, and Tate McRae), Benson Boone, and Australian powerhouse Amy Shark. Standouts like the bittersweet debut single “Bye” (penned with Benson Boone and Amy Allen) and “Welcome to LA” (co-created with Amy Shark) weave personal stories of transition and connection into radio-ready anthems. Other cuts such as “Heart on Fire,” “Navy Eyes,” “Ghost of Us,” “17,” and “Edge of Amazing” showcase the group’s versatility and the no-ego collaborative spirit they credit for the project’s cohesion.
Already charting at No. 16 on the Australian ARIA charts and spawning a sold-out headline tour that crisscrossed the US and Australia in late 2025, Afterglow has proven Midnight Til Morning is no fleeting reality-show phenomenon. An unplugged edition followed in November, offering stripped-back intimacy that only deepened fan connections. With a six-month world tour underway in 2026—including stops across Europe, Asia, and Latin America—the band is just getting started.
As Midnight Til Morning steps into the spotlight they built together, one thing is clear: this isn’t just a boyband. It’s a testament to what happens when four voices find harmony in the dark and emerge into the afterglow, ready to soundtrack a new generation’s nights and mornings alike.
