Paramount+ has announced it is developing a new TV adaptation of the 1997 crime drama film “Cop Land,” according to a report from Deadline. The project will be overseen by Robert Levine, known for co-creating “The Old Man,” who will serve as showrunner. James Mangold, who directed the original film, is also attached to the series as an executive producer, director, and writer.
The news of the show’s development was first revealed earlier this year. As of now, specific details such as casting and storyline remain under wraps, leaving fans eager for more updates. Paramount+’s acquisition of “Cop Land” comes after the project was among four bidders, ultimately securing a new home on the streaming platform.
The original film, released in 1997, was both written and directed by Mangold. It centered on the sheriff of a small New Jersey town who finds himself at odds with corrupt police officers from New York City. The film featured an ensemble cast including Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Patrick, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Sciorra, Noah Emmerich, and Cathy Moriarty.
Despite its modest budget of $15 million, “Cop Land” was a commercial success, grossing over $63 million at the box office. Fans and new viewers alike can look forward to this fresh take on a gritty crime story, now reimagined for television.
