The original The Social Network, directed by David Fincher, debuted in U.S. theaters in 2010. Written by Aaron Sorkin and adapted from Ben Mezrich’s 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires, the film chronicles the creation of Facebook. It featured performances by Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin, and Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker.
Recently, it has been announced via Deadline that the sequel will be titled The Social Reckoning. The film is set to hit theaters across the United States on October 9, 2026, distributed by Sony Pictures.
The Social Reckoning will open on the same day as Universal Pictures’ supernatural horror Other Mommy, directed by Rob Savage and starring Jessica Chastain, as well as The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. The week prior, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s latest project is scheduled for release, followed by a live-action Street Fighter film on October 16. The confirmed cast includes Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg, Mikey Madison as Frances Haugen, Jeremy Allen White as Jeff Horowitz, and Bill Burr.
According to a plot description from The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will explore how internal reports revealed the harmful impact of social media on teenagers and children. It will delve into issues such as misinformation, its role in inciting violence, and its connection to the violent Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021.
Aaron Sorkin is both writing and directing The Social Reckoning, as David Fincher is currently occupied with his Netflix project, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Cliff Booth. Sorkin is also serving as a producer alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser.
