According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy has been officially announced as the director of the upcoming film Somewhere Out There. Described as an “emotional sci-fi” movie, the project draws comparisons to 2016’s Arrival and 2022’s The Adam Project. Levy, who produced Arrival under Denis Villeneuve’s direction, also helmed The Adam Project.
The film’s plot centers on a grieving father who, after losing his wife, sends a message into the stars — and then begins to receive responses from something out there. While no casting decisions have been made yet, the Hollywood Reporter notes that “several prominent actors are already circling the role of the father.”
Somewhere Out There will be released on Netflix, following a “competitive bidding war” among studios. Details about other interested studios remain undisclosed. The screenplay is written by Max Taxe, with Becca Edelman overseeing the project for 21 Laps.
A release date has not yet been announced by Netflix.
Levy’s career in Hollywood gained momentum in the early 2000s after a few films in the late 1990s. His major breakthrough came with Big Fat Liar in 2002, followed by Just Married in 2023. He has since directed numerous family-oriented movies, including Cheaper by the Dozen (2003), The Pink Panther (2006), Night at the Museum (2006), Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009), and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014). Levy’s diverse filmography also includes Date Night (2010), Real Steel (2011), The Internship (2013), This Is Where I Leave You (2014), and Free Guy (2021).
