Sony Pictures has announced Leah McKendrick as the director and writer of the upcoming biopic about legendary country-pop star Shania Twain. The film, titled Shania, will explore the life and career of the five-time Grammy Award winner. Details about the plot remain under wraps at this stage.
McKendrick, who is also an actor, singer, and screenwriter, brings a diverse background to the project. She has appeared in films such as Say Yes, All I Need, M.F.A., and Scrambled—the latter of which she also directed. Her next project, Voicemails for Isabelle, a romantic comedy set to premiere on Netflix on June 19, 2026, features stars Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson, with a cast that includes Nick Offerman, Lukas Gage, Harry Shum Jr., Megan Danso, Gil Bellows, Toby Sandeman, and Spencer Lord.
It’s notable that McKendrick secured the directorial role for the Shania biopic before her upcoming film’s debut, a move likely influenced by her background as a pop singer and songwriter—experience that will undoubtedly contribute to bringing Twain’s story to life.
Shania Twain herself is serving as a producer alongside Amie Karp. Sony has been on a roll with musical biopics recently; in late 2022, the studio released Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody through Tri-Star. Additionally, Sony is set to produce a series of four biopics titled The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, directed by Sam Mendes.
