Teddy Swims has unveiled his most vulnerable track to date, titled “Break Up in Reverse,” now available through Warner Records. The song is a deeply heartfelt breakup anthem that diverges from typical themes of regret or resentment. Instead, it expresses a longing to revisit the past relationship in a way that could lead to a joyful ending, emphasizing love’s hope and possibility.
The release comes amidst a busy period of live performances for Swims, including a series of international festivals following his successful summer tour across the United States. Highlights included triumphant appearances at BottleRock and Bonnaroo, as well as being the only artist to perform at both Stagecoach and Coachella this year. At Coachella, he made headlines by inviting legendary artists David Lee Roth, Joe Jonas, and Vanessa Carlton onstage. In September, he kicks off THE UGLY TOUR, a major North American arena tour.
“Break Up in Reverse” opens intimately, with Swims’ soulful voice accompanying a gentle acoustic guitar. He paints a poignant scene: “Tears on your face climb back into your eyes / A little less on your nerves and a little more on your mind.” Collaborating with producers Julian Bunetta, John Ryan, Matt Zara, Mikky Ekko, and Tommy King, the song gradually swells with warm instrumentation and a touching chorus: “I wish we could break up in reverse / Every night would get better, instead of getting worse / I’d watch you slowly slip back into my hands / Say goodbye to me in the beginning, and love me in the end.”
Swims shared the personal significance behind the song: “‘Break Up in Reverse’ really hits home for me right now and where I am in my life. As I was writing this song and preparing my next album, I’ve been going through a tough time with my relationship with my baby’s mother coming to an end. The concept was inspired by an old Nas song called ‘Rewind,’ which tells a story in reverse. We thought it would be beautiful to apply that idea to my relationship, with the punchline being ‘say goodbye to me in the beginning and love me in the end.’ I hope it moves listeners as much as it moves me every time I perform and hear this song.”
The accompanying music video visualizes the song’s concept vividly. It begins with Swims standing before a pile of rubble. As he sings, a bulldozer moving in reverse reconstructs the mess into a cozy room filled with meaningful objects—photos, baby toys, puzzle pieces, and kintsugi pottery, a symbol of beauty in repair. Over time, Swims finds a sense of peace within the scene.
“Break Up in Reverse” is a raw, poetic reflection on love’s complexities and the hope for reconciliation, showcasing Teddy Swims’ ability to connect deeply through his music.
