Set against the vibrant backdrop of Los Angeles’ Watts neighborhood, IF I GO WILL THEY MISS ME is a deeply moving father-son story about childhood wonder, family, and the extraordinary ways children see the people they love.
At the heart of the film is twelve-year-old Lil Ant, a boy who views the world—and especially his father—through a lens of myth, imagination, and unwavering belief. For Lil Ant, his father is more than a parent; he is a larger-than-life figure whose complexities are softened by the boundless grace only a child can offer.
Written and directed by Walter Thompson-Hernández, who was named one of Variety’s “10 Directors to Watch,” the film explores the fragile and powerful bond between a father and son. Through Lil Ant’s eyes, audiences are invited to rediscover the wonder of childhood while confronting the complicated realities of family, love, and forgiveness.
The film stars Danielle Brooks, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Bodhi Dell, with a supporting creative team that includes producers Josh Peters, Saba Zerehi, and Ben Stillman. Executive producers include Brooks, Nicholson, Jon Batiste, Charles D. King, James Lopez, and others.
After premiering at Sundance earlier this year, IF I GO WILL THEY MISS ME received rave reviews and enthusiastic audience acclaim. The film also features a song from Grammy-winning musician Jon Batiste, adding another layer of emotional resonance to the story.
Distributed by Rich Spirit, the film will have a special engagement in Los Angeles on September 11, followed by a nationwide theatrical release in more than 30 markets on September 18. The Los Angeles engagement holds particular significance, bringing the film home to the community and city that inspired its story.
