INsiders Guide: Emily Henry, HELLO COSMOS, Anamanaguchi, Tiny Boost, MYLA, and Robert E. Blackmon’s Bestselling Book

Emily Henry is a DC-based singer-songwriter who performs her own personal brand of elegant electro-infused indie pop. Known for her powerful yet sweet vocals and an authentic musical instinct, she has been compared to artists such as Joni Mitchell and Sylvan Esso.

As a child, she began writing songs as soon as she was old enough to communicate. Enthralled with reading, storytelling, and fantasy, young Emily Henry would write melodies to the poems and lyrics recited by her favorite characters. She performed heavily throughout high school and college, releasing her first body of work shortly thereafter.

Her debut EP, Matchsticks, brilliantly showcases Henry’s angelic vocal strength while taking her music down a slightly darker, more mysterious road. The songs of Matchsticks unearth the complex emotions hidden inside stories both fictional and true, the spoken and the unspoken, in the little moments and in the big, transformational turning points — all done with a light folk-infused touch and a razor-sharp pop sensibility.

After a five-year absence, Emily Henry has released her highly anticipated sophomore album. Entitled The New World, the album is an eight-track collection of dynamic pop songs oozing with an atmospheric haze. Finding inspiration in “stories about love and magic and what it means to be a person,” the full-length album is “all about vulnerability and connection, feeling your way in the dark toward something new,” confides the songwriter. The result is a brilliant collection of enrapturing tunes that resonate deeply.

The first single, “I See the Light,” is a heart-wrenching song about finding a glimmer of hope in the darkness and climbing your way out of tough times. The song’s narrative is a personal reflection for Emily Henry and features dreamy, layered vocals over a fluid melody that offers feelings of comfort, inspiration, and wisdom to those who need it most. The song also draws influence from acclaimed author Naomi Alderman’s novel The Power, which she references in the lyrics, confiding, “You can get there — it might be a hard journey, but the new world is out there if you are determined enough.”

“The Sound” is a clever collage of rhythmic and charismatic pop that blends together to form a slinky song about “taking joy where you can find it.” Brimming with hope and passion, “The Sound” combines echoing vocals, snapping beats, and a downtempo atmospheric landscape to create the sweetest escape.

The third single, “Reach Out,” is a tribute to one of her favorite pieces of fiction, “The Adventure Zone,” a Dungeons & Dragons podcast created by the McElroy family. In their first campaign, “The Adventure Zone: Balance,” the McElroys tell a story of “found family, radical compassion, and optimism in times of great darkness and uncertainty.” Greatly affected by their profound message, Henry shares her unique interpretation in finding solace and community through a kaleidoscopic musical experience.

In “Spotlight”, Emily Henry unleashes a vibrant synth-infused explosion of sound complete with driving bass and animated vocals.

The New World is out now worldwide.

HELLO COSMOS are back with the brand new single “Hard Enough To Start With”.LISTEN HERE || WATCH VIDEO HEREExclusively taken from an upcoming mixtape release, ‘Golden Dirt’ (released 19th November 2021, via Cosmic Glue), the track will feature as part of 40-minutes of brand new material from the band.

Featuring pulverising synth lines and clipped percussives, it’s a track that finds Hello Cosmos breaking from their traditional territory and exploring new worlds of sound that touch on hip-hop, electronica, spontaneous spoken word expressionism and beyond.

With a beat-driven backing that lays a platform for the Hello Cosmos frontman to get up on his soapbox, “Hard Enough To Start With” is the sound of an artist truly at the end of his tether and cutting loose. Speaking about the track, Ben Robinson says of the track:

“About 2pm on the 5th monday of lockdown with the collapse of live music weighing down on me I went to make some music for escapism, but even that wasn’t helping. I put down a bass line I thought was rubbish, mumbled into the microphone and being totally uninspired ranted about how I was feeling. Absolutely expected to delete the file and never see it again but when we were putting Golden Dirt together it felt like part of the story and Olchemist worked his production skills on it.

Following in the footsteps of recent singles “Loud Is Beautiful” and “From The Ground Up”, “Hard Enough To Start With” is the latest cut to emerge from the fascinating new mixtape project: ‘Golden Dirt’. Released on all platforms on 19th November, the mixtape is a new collaboration with San Francisco-based producer The Olchemist and sees the band pulling a something of a handbrake turn on the full-throttle psych/punk sound established on their 2021 debut ‘Dream Harder’.

Written as a means of expressing the frustration and boredom Robinson experienced as a musician and concert promoter (Bluedot/Kendal Calling) during the lockdowns of the last year, the frontman explains how the new ‘Golden Dirt’ mixtape came about:

“I found a little outlet back where I began, in a room by myself engaging with music on a very personal level, as an outlet, as a mental health crutch as a way of understanding what I was feeling, as a way of lifting myself out of depression, as a way of connecting with other people albeit still not in person. The result of those times is a series of recordings I’ve put together into a record called ‘Golden Dirt’”

This is the first record from Anamanaguchi this year, following their 2019 album, ‘[USA]’, and a string of 2020 summer singles including, “Stay Home.”

With a digitized sound that’s firmly established them in the video game space, Anamanaguchi wrote and composed the celebrated soundtrack to this year’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World game. They’ll continue to fuel the gaming community as “Water Resistant” enters the soccer/car game Rocket League, leading its major move to mobile with Rocket League Sideswipe.

As sought-after remixers, Anamanaguchi recently reworked Dorian Electra‘s album title-track “My Agenda”,in addition to Porter Robinson‘s “Get Your Wish” after playing his Secret Sky virtual festival last year. Embarking on a European run in May, they’ll hit venues like Melkweg and O2 Academy, with more music dropping on Monstercat soon.

Hailed as the voice of the streets Tiny Boost gives us solid proof of why he has the title via his link up with TruCulture on ‘Day & Night’.

With gritty visuals, directed by ‘SP’, Tiny Boost is portrayed handling his business and taking part in a number of escapades before the crescendo which sees him celebrating his accomplishments. Including the use of cinematic shots and intricate lighting, Tiny Boost is centre stage for the visuals on this top collaboration with experienced music executives ‘Jud and Fos’ from TruCulture, which has resulted in a heartfelt street ballad.

The video is the first run in a run of various singles from their forthcoming project ‘Da Glue’, a project curated during the height of lockdown by TruCulture, who are a label that focus on encouraging and advocating talent that come from disadvantaged backgrounds, people suffering with mental health issues and also artists that have spent time within the prison system. Their aim is to help young people utilise music to make positive changes in their lives. For this latest project, Jud and Fos wanted to work with and showcase up and coming, young talent as well as adding in some established artists. Following their first single release with rapper ASBO, they continue to add the heat with ‘Day & Night’ alongside Tiny Boost.

I learned about unrequited love back in high school while reading Romeo and Juliet. I often wondered what the story of Romeo’s unrequited love, Rosaline, was really about and found myself dreaming of her side of the story.

Some love stories have a Romeo, a Juliet, and a Rosaline.

It turns out that I often get cast as the Rosaline.

Years ago, I went to Nashville for a songwriting bootcamp and started writing this song with Jordan Sapp. I drove down to Nashville by myself and sang what you hear in the chorus.

My loneliness and the extended amount of time to process made me realize my deep care for a friend of mine, so when we got in the studio, the story of having a complicated friendship seemed to pour out.

My new single is about how I felt led on by someone who saw me as ‘just a friend.’

The love I had wasn’t mutual, yet it also wasn’t discouraged.

I hope you can connect with the dramatic, raw emotions of this song. Thank you for taking the time to listen. I look forward to sharing more music with you in the new year.

Yours,

MYLA

In March 2020, Robert E. Blackman hopped on the popular app TikTok, like millions of others to break the monotony during lock down. One year later, his comedic content has drawn 1.4 MILLION followers. Surreptitiously, he made others laugh to keep himself from crying. His mother Clara C. Blackmon, 72, was in a Detroit hospital battling the fight of her life against Covid-19.

Clara spent a total of 79 days in the hospital, fifteen of them on a ventilator. Miraculously she lived and walked out of the hospital on her own two feet!

Robert thanked Select Specialty Hospital the best way he knew how, by chronicling the details of the extraordinary experience in a new book. COURAGE BEHIND THE MASK, an Amazon BESTSELLER, recounts a family’s story of triumph and tragedy of the Covid-19 virus.

“It is a love letter to the health care professionals who risked their lives to save my mom’s.” Robert revealed. In addition to her story, several members of the medical team including her physician Dr. Mohammed Saleh M.D. share in their own words what life was like for them in those early days of the pandemic.
