A film adaptation of the classic video game Space Invaders is officially underway, with New Line Cinema leading the project and bringing on two screenwriters to craft the story.
According to a recent report from Deadline, writers Ben Zazove and Evan Turner, known for their work on The Out-Laws, have been chosen to develop the screenplay. Details about the film’s direction or narrative approach remain under wraps, leaving fans curious about how the iconic game will be translated to the big screen.
Originally launched in 1978 by Japanese company Taito for arcade play, Space Invaders has cemented its place as one of the most recognizable and influential video games ever created. The gameplay involves defending against waves of descending alien invaders using a horizontally moving laser cannon at the bottom of the screen. Notably, Space Invaders was the first game to introduce endless gameplay loops and is considered a pioneer of the fixed shooter genre.
Over the years, Space Invaders has left a lasting impact on the gaming industry, often credited with helping to launch the golden age of arcade gaming. The game was a commercial blockbuster, earning over $3.8 billion by 1982 and ranking as the second-highest-grossing arcade game of all time, just behind Pac-Man.
