Universal Pictures has announced that the upcoming romantic comedy starring Emma Stone and Chris Pine will hit theaters on May 21, 2027. The studio also revealed key creative details about the project, which marks a reunion between Stone and her longtime collaborator behind the camera.
Directed by Dave McCary, known for his work on “Brigsby Bear,” the film is described as a two-hander rom-com, although plot details are currently being kept under wraps. The screenplay was originally written by Patrick Kang and Michael Levin, with the most recent draft penned by Jen Statsky and Travis Helwig.
Emma Stone considered several projects for the fall before committing to “The Catch,” and Chris Pine soon joined the cast, solidifying the film’s production plans for later this year. The project is produced by Shawn Levy and Dan Levine through 21 Laps, alongside Michael H. Weber. Stone, McCary, and Ali Herting are producing through their company Fruit Tree, which recently signed a first-look deal with Universal after securing the film in 2024. Robin Fisichella serves as an executive producer, with Erik Baiers and Jacqueline Garell overseeing the project for Universal.
“The Catch” will premiere in a competitive pre-Memorial Day weekend slot, which also features Paramount and Blumhouse’s revival of the “Paranormal Activity” franchise. Additionally, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation will release “Bad Fairies,” starring Cynthia Erivo and Ncuti Gatwa, during the same weekend.
Emma Stone recently received her fourth Oscar acting nomination for her leading role in “Bugonia,” for which she also earned a Best Picture nomination as a producer. This marks her historic achievement as the first woman to receive Oscar nominations as both actress and producer for two different films, a feat she first accomplished in 2024 with “Poor Things.”
Chris Pine, meanwhile, starred alongside Jenny Slate in the Sundance-premiered romance “Carousel.” He is also set to appear in Zellner Brothers’ sci-fi comedy “Alpha Gang,” which features an ensemble cast including Cate Blanchett, Dave Bautista, Lily Rose-Depp, and Lea Seydoux.
Director Dave McCary made his feature debut in 2017 with “Brigsby Bear,” establishing himself as a notable filmmaker in the industry.
