Netflix has greenlit a new straight-to-series drama featuring Claire Danes in the lead role. The project is created by Sarah Treem, the acclaimed showrunner and co-creator of Showtime’s Golden Globe-winning series The Affair.
Danes will portray Annika, a distinguished breast cancer surgeon whose life takes a dramatic turn after she receives her own diagnosis. The series centers on the unexpected connection between Annika and her new patient, Nate, a rising political star. As Annika navigates her cancer treatment, their lives become intertwined in ways that explore themes of love, sex, illness, death, family, children, health, medicine, and the deeper questions about life’s meaning.
Sarah Treem, who also created and wrote the series Lovesick—based on the Israeli series by Rona Tamir, Tal Granit, and Sharon Maymon—serves as an executive producer on the project. She expressed her excitement about working with Danes: “I’m thrilled to tell this story with the genius Claire Danes. We’ve wanted to collaborate for a long time, and this character, Annika, feels like a dream come true for both of us.” Treem also highlighted the personal significance of the story, saying, “Telling a story about life’s big questions—life, death, love, courage, science, faith—during these turbulent times is an extraordinary opportunity I don’t take lightly.”
Currently, Claire Danes is the only confirmed cast member, and she will also serve as an executive producer alongside Keshet Studios’ Avi Nir, Keren Shahar, and Peter Traugott. Additional casting news is expected soon.
Danes continues her partnership with Netflix, having starred opposite Matthew Rhys in the streamer’s 2025 limited series The Beast in Me, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Netflix has not yet announced a release date for Lovesick.
