Four years after starring in the acclaimed BBC America series Killing Eve, Jodie Comer has secured her next major TV role. She will lead the upcoming HBO miniseries The Chain, created by Damon Lindelof, known for Watchmen and Lanterns. Comer has been cast as Rachel, a suburban mother faced with an unimaginable choice when her daughter is kidnapped.

The Chain is based on Adrian McKinty’s 2019 award-winning novel and has received an eight-episode order from HBO. The series follows Rachel as she navigates a terrifying kidnapping scheme that forces her to commit crimes to save her child. The story unfolds with Rachel receiving a call from a woman revealing that her daughter, Kylie, is in danger, and that she must follow the caller’s instructions precisely—pay ransom, find another child to abduct, and do whatever it takes to save her own.

Damon Lindelof will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the series, with the pilot scripted by Lindelof, Carly Wray, and Breannah Gibson. The project will be co-produced by HBO and Media Res, with Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer overseeing production alongside McKinty, Shane Salerno, Gibson, and Joe Iberti. This series is part of Lindelof’s overall deal with HBO.

Comer’s portrayal of Villanelle in Killing Eve earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress. Most recently, she appeared in the horror film 28 Years Later (2025) alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson. She is set to star in Hugh Jackman’s upcoming thriller The Death of Robin Hood, scheduled for release on June 19, 2026.

The novel’s synopsis reveals the harrowing premise: when a mother is targeted by a criminal mastermind, she must commit a crime to rescue her kidnapped daughter. The kidnapper is part of The Chain, an endless scheme that transforms victims into criminals—fueling a dangerous cycle driven by greed and moral compromise. The story underscores the terrifying reality that when it comes to protecting one’s child, parents are capable of unimaginable acts.
