Lionsgate has revealed a thrilling new development for the highly anticipated reboot of The Blair Witch Project, a horror classic that first terrified audiences nearly 27 years ago. The reboot is being developed by James Wan, the mastermind behind Saw and The Conjuring franchises.
The studio confirmed that emerging horror director Dylan Clark has been chosen to direct the new film. Clark’s involvement was initially reported almost a month ago. He is currently working on rewriting the screenplay, which was originally penned by Chris Devlin. Besides the Blair Witch reboot, Clark is also set to direct Portrait of God for Universal Pictures, a project based on his viral horror short from 2022. That film will be produced by Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele.
In a significant move, original stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams have signed on as executive producers for the reboot. They join the original filmmakers, Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale, who are also serving as executive producers. Lionsgate emphasized that their involvement is essential to preserving the franchise’s mythology and legacy while introducing it to a new generation of horror fans.
The project is produced by Wan’s Atomic Monster, Jason Blum’s Blumhouse, Roy Lee, and Divide/Conquer’s Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath. Additional executive producers include Steven Schneider, Michael Clear, and Judson Scott. Atomic Monster’s Alayna Glasthal is overseeing production on behalf of the company, while Scott O’Brien and Pavan Kalidindi are managing the project on behalf of Lionsgate.
The original The Blair Witch Project, released in 1999, followed a group of students making a documentary about the local folklore of Burkittsville, Maryland. The film was both critically acclaimed and a massive box office hit, grossing approximately $248 million worldwide against a modest budget of less than $1 million.
