Ben Stiller is preparing to star in a new Apple TV+ series titled Protective Custody, created by Mike Judge, the mind behind King of the Hill, along with acclaimed comedy writers Steve Hely and Dave King. The show will feature Stiller as a disgraced billionaire, marking his second leading role on television following the upcoming series The Off Weeks.
The series follows a fallen financier accused of massive fraud who is placed into protective custody. There, he must navigate prison politics, attempt to repair his reputation, and face the repercussions of his actions while awaiting trial. According to Deadline, the show promises a compelling mix of drama and comedy as the character confronts his new reality.
Protective Custody also highlights Stiller’s expanding involvement in television beyond acting. He is well known for his iconic roles in early 2000s comedies like Zoolander, Tropic Thunder, Night at the Museum, and the Fockers franchise. Recently, he has gained recognition as a filmmaker, notably directing and producing the acclaimed series Severance. Stiller’s ongoing partnership with Apple TV includes the upcoming Apple Original film The Dink and his return to the Fockers universe with Focker-in-Law later this year.
Mike Judge, renowned for creating King of the Hill, Silicon Valley, and Beavis and Butt-Head, will also direct select episodes of Protective Custody. The show originated from a pitch by Ben Silverman and Propagate Content to Apple, described as “Hogan’s Heroes meets The Office.”
The series is set to be executive produced by Stiller and John Lesher (Red Hour), Ben Silverman, Howard Owens, and Rodney Ferrell (Propagate Content), Michael Rotenberg and Oly Obst (3 Arts Entertainment), with Academy Award nominee Nanette Burstein also serving as an executive producer.
As of now, Protective Custody does not have an announced release date.
