Actress Sadie Sink is set to lead a new television adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ acclaimed novel, “The Marriage Plot.” The limited series has been commissioned by FX, produced by A24, and will be available for streaming on Hulu. Sink, best known for her role as Max Mayfield in Netflix’s Stranger Things, will take on the central role in this adaptation of Eugenides’ 2011 novel.
About the Series and Source Material
“The Marriage Plot” explores the lives of three recent college graduates navigating love, identity, and the transition into adulthood. The story is set at Brown University in the early 1980s and revolves around Madeleine Hanna, an English major writing her thesis on the 19th-century marriage plot. She finds herself torn between two suitors: Leonard Bankhead, a bipolar biology student with whom she shares a passionate connection, and Mitchell Grammaticus, a religious studies major seeking spiritual clarity and love.
Following graduation, Madeleine and Leonard move to Cape Cod for his research, while Mitchell embarks on travels through Europe and India. The novel illuminates their evolving relationships and the profound choices they face about love and self-discovery.
Creative Team and Production Details
The adaptation is being developed by Will Arbery, a writer known for his work on HBO’s Succession, who will serve as the showrunner. Hiro Murai, a filmmaker recognized for his work on FX’s Atlanta, will direct episodes and also serve as an executive producer. Both Arbery and Murai bring their expertise to this high-profile collaboration between FX and A24, two studios renowned for producing critically acclaimed, character-driven television.
While it remains to be seen how closely the series will stick to Eugenides’ novel, the project promises a compelling exploration of youthful love, ambition, and the complexities of identity.
