The highly anticipated psychological horror film Saccharine has officially dropped its trailer, igniting excitement among film enthusiasts worldwide. Following its impressive debut at the Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered to critical acclaim, the film also made a notable European debut in the Berlinale Special Section. Its recent screenings at the 2026 Sydney Film Festival were met with sold-out audiences, further cementing its status as a must-see release.

Directed and written by Natalie Erika James—whose breakout success with Relic and subsequent acclaimed film Apartment 7A starring Julia Garner has established her as a distinctive voice in genre filmmaking—Saccharine promises a chilling exploration of obsession and the supernatural.

The film centers on Hana, portrayed by Midori Francis (Grey’s Anatomy, The Sex Lives of College Girls), a first-year medical student whose fixation on weight loss spirals into darkness. Inspired by a friend’s dramatic physical transformation after taking a controversial diet pill made from human ashes, Hana becomes desperate to achieve her ideal figure. Unable to afford the pills herself, she resorts to theft—stealing bones from cadavers during her anatomy classes. As Hana’s weight begins to drop, she becomes haunted by the ghost of the woman she is consuming. With the supernatural entity gaining influence over her, Hana must confront her fears and find a way to break free before she loses herself entirely.

Supporting cast includes Danielle Macdonald (If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You) as Hana’s best friend Josie, and Madeleine Madden (Strife) as Alanya, Hana’s fitness influencer love interest.

Saccharine is a production of Carver Films and Thrum Films, with major investment from Screen Australia, XYZ in partnership with IPR.VC, and Stan, in collaboration with VicScreen.
Fans can look forward to Saccharine hitting Australian cinemas on July 9th, 2026. With its intense narrative and striking visuals, the film is poised to leave a lasting impression on audiences this summer.
